Aging in American Culture

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kur5uBCfbj4

Im sooo sorry about the delay everyone.
But my presentation was about how American culture feel about older aged citizens. I really need suggestions on a good arguement that will be interesting for the paper. The arguement that i had in mind was about how American feels about elders is just to broad. So if i can get a little feedback on this i would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You

  1. I think America has a multitude of opinions about elders from they have wisdom to they are unactive. There is a very large range of ideas to go off of. You could flip your paper around and talk about the dying of youth and what aspects of youth go away as you age. Some ideas could be that the body slowly begins to function less from a physical aspect to old people are less aware than than youth.

    1. Yea that is a good idea... but mainly appearance is a big part! But now a days age doesnt matter when it comes to death really so...i dont think elderly people worry bout being or staying young to prevent that from happening because death rates have gone up in the past years...but thanks thats something i will think about!

  2. I think your paper could really go places. Its similar to mine in that we are both talking about youthfulness in America. I think that you have a lot of possibilites to run with. Elderly people try to stay young because they don't want to lose the pleasures and indulgences that youth brings.

  3. To make your paper more specific, you could choose one particular view that American culture has about older people. For example, old people don't know how to use technology, old people try to live vicariously through younger people, old people aren't active, etc. One thing that might be interesting is looking at if old people share the same stereotypes about old people that younger people do, so they try to overcompensate and act as 'young' as possible so that they don't live up to society's (and their own) expectations about being old. You could also look at what characteristics American culture looks at to classify someone as old. It is their appearance, activity level, or age alone?

  4. You did a great job on your presentation and I feel that you could take this paper in many directions but if you are trying to rely more on the older generation you can look at how the older people are starting to use technology or mention so many differences between old and young in American culture.

  5. This is a great topic to write a paper. You can start this paper from many direction but I think you should try it from our college student.and you can start it from two views. For example, although older people don't know how to use advanced technology or new software, they can hold those agricultural technique that youth people can't.

  6. I think you could possibly talk about how the youthfulness lives on in elder people. You could branch off of this idea by talking about why they want to stay young and how this compares to other cultures. Hope this helps!

  7. I thought you might talk about how older youth life. You can be turned away from this idea, to talk about why they want to stay young, compared with other cultures. I hope this helps!

  8. Definitely look at the changes in the past couple years on our attitudes toward the elderly. We used to idolize helping and caring for the elderly but things have began to change. How can an elderly person keep their youth if they are forced into retirement homes? You could look at the recent statistics of how many families care for their elders and not let someone else do it for them. When they do not have anyone, especially younger people, to teach them new things how can they keep their youth.

  9. I think one reason of the feeling toward older people tracked to the role they played to society. After older people get retired, they become unemployment. They will not contribut further to the work and they may need help from society. However, their wisdom is a forture that could be utilized. You could focus on speccific espect that American feel about elder people like economically, intellegiently.

  10. you could gear your thesis towards technology in current day vs past and see if you could find some interesting comparisons. and then connect age and the old people who actually lived through this drastic technological change. after doing this, you could connect this to how american culture sees old people by using this point as a mirror.

  11. Old people tend to like being around with young people to feel the energy and enthusiasm they bring. Maybe you can focus on why old people do so and then how they do so. And most importantly how it relates to American culture about aging and trying to stay yound.

  12. I think there are two significant aspects to consider elders in American culture. First, the roles that elder act as in family can be analysed to identify the aging issue in American family. Second, the social status in which the elders locate can be discussed to expose the aging issue in social structure.

  13. i have one idea that you can think about it. Many elder people want to stay young because they dont want to loose passion and strength. However, i think in the US, there are many elder people still keeping their passion, creative, and wise to live in other life style.
