My thesis focuses on  that American culture values materialistic wealth.  The ideology is that the possessions of materialist goods indicate the success.
One of my secondary sources examines the purchase habits of American with some European countries. He found that American are in the leading position of luxury consumption. He concluded that the expression of personal affluence through consumption have remained central to American consumer culture. European country has not developed value system that has promote luxury consumption in the same degree. Another way is through the examination of mass media. Today’s commercials and other TV programs has shown lots of depiction of materialistic wealth. They convince people that the product is good and you should pursue it. And this can have an effect on public’s  view. In conclustion, materialistic wealth is valued by American culture.
The question is why do you think American value materialistic wealth?

  1. Good job developing the central idea for your paper. Personally, I think Americans value materialistic wealth because they are exposed to it everywhere they go. With this, materialistic items have in a sense, become second-nature for many. You could do research to see if materialism has always been a value of American culture or if it has developed with technology.

  2. Great job! I think your thesis topic is very interesting. One reason I think Americans value materialistic wealth is because they believe it will bring them happiness. A lot of times in our culture, people believe that having very nice or expensive things shows wealth and success. People buy more luxury items to make their lives better since they think it will make their lives happier. You mentioned that you compared how many luxury items Americans buy with other countries. You could also compare how 'happy' people from these countries are compared to Americans to see how the buying rates compare to each other.

  3. i like the question you raise about why americans believe that materialistic possessions will bring happiness. my answer to that would be because of how we were all brought up as a society. american society is built on capitalism, and the people who make the rules and commercials want to keep it that way. this pattern just leads to the never ending cycle of wanting to buy something that you really dont need.

  4. Great job on your presentation. Your thesis is great. This is very important in life because many people really do enjoy the materialistic of luxury because that's all they care about in life which gives them happiness. One thing you could look at is how materialistic is happiness but how could it displease someone?

  5. Today you see many commercials on many different products. The main goal they have is to make people buy the product they are selling, even if they dont think the product is good. They do this by advertisements but they are not always truthful. You could see how these commercials get people to buy their products in the first place. You see a lot of main companies on television all the time so they are obviously doing something right. This goes along with luxury because they are the ones that have the money to keep making these commercials. Americans are about competition and having nice things is something a person can boast about.

  6. Your thesis statement is pretty clear and directive. A clear topic is very essential to your paper. Talking about material culture in American culture calls for strong evidence and secondary sources. I think that maybe you can put the "comparing to European"part after demontrating material culture in America first.

  7. I think possessions of materialist goods is a remarkable indicator of success in American society. However, it is not the only indicator of personal achievements. In American culture, materialist goods just is a means of realizing happiness. Undoubtedly, happiness is the ultimate object of everybody and love is also a significant means to realize happiness.

  8. I really like your topic especially because I agree with it. American culture values materials and wealth more and more because it is a tangible gauge of wealth. Culture and family are invisible to the naked eye, but a large house or expensive car are rather noticeable. America has an obsession with material wealth because of American Culture's idea that everybody can make it big.

  9. Awesome job on your presentation! Your topic and thesis are very interesting. Materialistic americans i feel want wealth so much because they believe it will bring them happiness. Plenty of incidencets in the history of american culture, show that people thought that wealth and material things would bring them success and or fame. Americans today do the same thing buying buying the most expensive "luxurious" items on the market thinking it will gain them popularity.

  10. Nice presentation! Um i definitely agree that american culture values money or mataerial things as HAPPINESS but really its a cover up of how people really feel deep down inside in my opinion. Wanting people to think just because they have this and that, that there is nothing else they lack since they have it all. I guess thats something you can mention. Being known as wealthy is a way to gain respect or to be popular in my opinion thats why americans value it so much. Its so bad to the point if a child sees a famous person on tv they automatically say i wanna be like them not because of exactly what they do but because of all the things they are able to get so. Materials is a rather important point to convey in your paper! Good topic
