The central theme for my argument for the commercial involves the view of "traditional" gender roles and the view of a "traditional" family (view of heterosexual and homosexual couples or single-parent families) in American culture. Please let me know what I can improve on. Thanks!

Over the last decade homosexuality has had a lot more awareness and emergence. There have been laws passed in certain states petioning gay marriage. Before this last decade, homosexuality seemed to be less commonplace in advertising and commercials. I think single parent famiilies receive more sympathy than other family types because it is seen as a struggle. I think you could find sources that show the difference if any in raising children from the different family types.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a great insight in your observation of this commercial,of the implicit meaning...Talking about nontraditional families can be the main focus of your paper, because it really is an unique cultural theme in America. In China it is common to live with your parents or even grandparents.
ReplyDeleteYea Jess this overall a real good idea. If im correct basically your making the arguement how its funny most commercials lean towards the traditional family mom dad and children rather than promoting or noticing other household way. Correct? Yea this is a good arguement if so. Because now a days the most common housing is one parent in the house or like you said some homosexuals raise kids as well so. Yea!! Definitely !
ReplyDeleteI think that your presentation went well. I think that your paper really focuses around the American Dream and whether or not that it is accepted by today's culture. I think that you could encorporate a lot of the political debate on whether or no homosexual marriage is okay or not and also debates on whether or not gay parents will lead to gay children.
ReplyDeleteYou presentation was good! Going back to what was mentioned in class, I think it would be a good idea for you to look at what the definition for a 'traditional family' is. You could look at statistics for how many families in America have homosexual vs. heterosexual parents, and single vs. married vs. divorced parents. It would be interesting to see if the use of the term traditional family has changed over time. The gender roles aspect of your argument is interesting. To tie both parts of your argument together, you could look at how the change in what a traditional family is has changed or affects gender roles. In today's culture, the type of family situation you are in may dictate what gender roles you follow rather than your sex. For example, single fathers may take on more of the culturally constructed 'female gender roles' than a heterosexual married man.
ReplyDeleteYour commercial hits the message of American culture when dealing with traditional family and traditional gender roles. Homosexuality families compared to heterosexual families have changed in society today compared to how it used to be. I think you could look at how gender roles of some sorts affect heterosexual and homosexual families in American. I feel that in some way it depends on how your family is raised to what gender roles and who you are in life.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a lot of inspiration, observe the implicit meaning of this commercial ... Your paper, in talking about the main focus of the non-traditional family, because it really is a unique American cultural themes. In China, it is with your parents, even grandparents living together.
ReplyDeleteWith the way the economy is today finding work is getting harder and harder. You can try to see if it is harder for people of certain ages or ethnicities to find jobs, also why we have lost so many jobs in the first place. With the loss of jobs, many people still have families to watch over and they will do anything to make sure they are cared for. As people fail, they look to other people to help. Your example of the people coming together is a very good example for your argument.
ReplyDeleteDespite the commercial trying to empahsis the traditional view toward gender role.A discounted porpotion of family has changed gender role. You have done a great job talking about the conflict between traditional gender role with the changed family structure and ecnomic.I think you can look at this from economic perspective.
ReplyDeletei think it is already fine at where you are. maybe a comparison of the changes of what a "traditional family" was in the past and in the present?
ReplyDeleteI think the traditional concept of gender roles is based on the nature of human and the requirement of production. However, with the development of human society, science and technology, the social and ideology extensively varied and productivity is enormously improved. So the concept of gender roles has corresponding changed in modern society.
ReplyDeleteHi Jess,
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job with your presentation, it was neat to see that we both looked at the same commercial but took completely different routes with our paper topics. I think looking into what caused these non-traditional families to become more prominent throughout America today would be a neat route to take. Maybe even using other cultures family styles as a contrast to American ones would be a good way to strengthen your argument.
