The Dog Stikes Back: Volkswagen Commercial

Here is my post I know it is a tad late, I couldn't figure out the blog thing because it said I couldn't accept the invitation.

However, it somehow let me in randomly?? So here it is.

My paper is about the Idolization of youthfulness in America. My main thesis is that, Americans idolize youthfulness and will go to extreme measures to acheive this youthfulness.

  1. You did a great job on your presentation and how this commercial affects youth in America culture. I believe you need to mention how adults are trying stay young forever because that is key in American culture? I know you said plastic surgery but add more. Hope this helps!

  2. In this commercial, the dog left me a great memory. Do you want to mention that American guys keep exercise everyday, because they want to keep youth? Your presentation really help me to better understand the American culture about the Idolization of youthfulness.

  3. Hi Dylan,
Your presentation was very good! You made the link between the commercial and your sources clear, and I like the examples you gave of the many extreme measures that Americans will go to in order to attain a youthful appearance. The examples of specific extreme measures Americans will take would be great to emphasize in your paper! I think it would be interesting for you to look at why Americans idolize youth, wether it be because youthfulness is associated with beauty, health, success, etc. It may complicate your project too much, but I think it would also be interesting to look at why American culture idolizes youth, while other cultures (usually collectivistic) idolize old age, since it signifies wisdom and knowledge. Good luck with your final paper!

  5. You did a good job in explain the pursuit of youth in American culture and relate the commercial to this topic. You have mentioned that people will not feel satisfy when they the ideology that youth is better than old. You may talk more about the good consequence that follow this ideology.

  6. Very interesting topic and content! How the dog behaves reflects on how people bebahve in daily life. Do sports, lose weight, and be physically active. Youth is certainly a good point to write about. American culture values youth, athletic(energy), and health a lot. Also, I actually think that American culture values animals too! Especially dogs and cats, which are treated as friends or "children". Hardly in any other country will people value dog that highly. (This puppy is so so cute......)

  7. In my opinion, youth represents energy, hope, healthy and etc what are positive. You could specify the reasons about why Americans would prefer youth.

  8. Good job comparing the idolization of youth between American and Japanese culture. You could maybe look into why Americans idolize youthfulness. Why are Americans so focused on staying "forever young" while in other cultures the process of aging is viewed as a good thing?

  9. Looking at America's emphasis on the need for youthfulness was a really good idea. Comparing it to another culture was a good idea too in that it will give your argument for how American culture is different a stronger basis. I agree with those that said to look into what lead to this need for youthfulness and maybe even researching to find how many ads come out each year that are related to age defying treatments would add an extra flare to your argument while relating it to advertisement and just how media stresses it to the culture watching them.

  10. I think Americans emphasize youth more than most cultures and I agree that it is idolized in a sense. I think advertising has pushed more people to extremes in our culture. Young girls may resort to extreme dieting to look liek a certain model or actress. Young men may use anabolics or go to the gym often to make their bodies overly muscular. I think an addition you could make that might help is if you could find an article that relates to how models or magazine cover people influence the standards or youth's perception of body.

  11. I agree with everyone you did very well with the comparisons. But looking deeper into why "staying young" is so prevalent and popular in our culture today! Great start!

  12. These are good topic and the related commercial. It is a common fact that youth pursues idolizatio and most companies make full use of this attitude to push whole society. Also, you did a great job in comparing american culture with japanese culture.

  13. I believe many Americans do idolize youth and you did a good job of explaining this. Why is aging seen as a bad thing in American culture? With so many judgmental people and labels given it is hard to age in a way. We want to be the person people envy, not the person thats gets judge. This is probably why most people believe staying in shape and looking young is extremely important. Look into why this is and the ways people try to stay young.

  15. I strongly agree with you in the idolization of youthfulness of American culture. First of all, not only American culture extremely values youthfulness, but also almost every culture emphasize youthfulness due to the nature of human. In addition, especially in developed country, youthfulness plays a more important role in social ideology because living standard is higher and human rights is effectively protected. So people would like to live longer and healthier.
