In the commercial the desert appears 4 times, it is a symbol of isolation, and the driver is an individual who relies strongly on himself instead of waiting for others to help when in an emergency.
My paper consists of two parts in individualism: first, making one’s own choices, and taking responsibility, second, pursuing and maximizing individuals' goals and interests.
In the commercial, the young driver shouts out: “Stay with me ” and then accelerates and brakes repeatedly to generate a heart resuscitation power to save his boss life. The driver takes immediate actions based on his own thoughts and determination instead of waiting for some one else to tell him what to do. He makes his decisions, takes responsibility for his actions, and saves his boss.
The second part, The driver uses a method that no one used before by changing the speed of the car , which serves as a heart pounding machine. He is taking risk, breaking the old rules and creating new ideas all by himself. Risk taking, innovativeness and proactiveness are highly encouraged in Individualism.
I feel like my thesis statement is kind of broad by focusing on the big idea: individualism in America. But thank you all for listening my presentation and those who gave me feedback today!
Ellie
There are many moments when someone will have to "think fast". Sometimes they will be tough choices and other times they will be easy ones. You could have to think fast in a life or death situation or it could be something much more simple than that.
ReplyDeleteGood job talking about how the commercial suggests individualism and relating it to American culture. You could maybe relate this a little more to American culture by talking about the significance of personal interest and how it connects to individualism. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteI find the topic very interesting. Because I am from a collectivist culture, living in an individualism culture is not easy for me. I would like to understand their perspective, thus help me adapt to the new environment. The presentation dose a good job explaining the connection between the commercial and the individualism culture and explain well on two aspects of individualism culture.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great on your presentation. I feel that this commercial shows a lot on individualism. One thing that you could look at is why they take that risk of individualism and not want to get any help and give examples of that because there are many ways that people don't want to get that help.
ReplyDeleteGood job on your presentation,
ReplyDeleteThis commercial shows plenty of individualism within American culture. You could possibly look at the negative/positive side effects of this individualism, and how a persons general midset has a lot to do with whether or not they are an individual or not.
Hi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteGreat presentation! You have a lot of good information. One thing I think you could talk more about is how a culture of individualism has a high focus on people being innovative reaching their highest potential. I believe this fits into the part of your paper that talks about pursuing and maximizing an individual's goals and interests. You could talk more about how the driver was being innovative and relying only on himself to accomplish the task of saving his boss' life. I don't know your exact thesis statement, but if you want to make it more less broad, you could add the specific aspects of individualism that you will be covering. For example, America has a strong culture of individualism, and therefor puts a high value on making one’s own choices, taking responsibility, and pursuing one's goals and interests.
I think you have been almost done all your paper. You presented the value of individualism in the American culture. Because we live in the Collective country, we can feel the benefit and the disadvantage of the value of Individualism. Maybe you can find some examples about these.
ReplyDeleteI think individualism makes style what can identify a person. You could hold more examples how society get advantages from individualism.
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you saw the undertones of individualism in your commercial and related it to American culture. Maybe to link it even more to american culture you could bring up some of the things Americans do that set them apart from collectivist cultures. I've never been to a collectivist culture, but I have had friends from them and one thing they said that was different from their country was the importance Americans put on owning their own car. Not only does the family need one car to get around, but every family member over sixteen wants to own their very own car. My friend was from a culture where some families didn't own a car. They didn't seem to need them, because of how strongly the public transportation in here country was used by it's citizens. I'm not sure how things like this are in your culture, but I think it would add a lot of depth and very interesting points to your paper.
I think individualism in our culture is what it thrives on. Everybody wants to succeed fro their own personal reasons at some extent. These individual reasons range from sustaining oneself to sustaining a family to enjoying oneself. You could look at what motivates people to succeed as an individual. What drives them to make certain decisions, Why did the employee save the boss's life? Was it to learn the secret to being a successful bussinessman or to get in a better standing with his boss for a possible promotion? Every individual pursures certain goals. These are just some ideas to thinka about.
ReplyDeleteHey Ellie
ReplyDeleteYea overall very good presentation about individualism. "Think fast" as a theme is a pretty good idea because in American culture we do think fast and do things for ourselves we dont rely on anyone else. Individualism also ties in with being independent so think about that as well.
i like the idea of individualism and how it actually effects society as a hole. what are the pros and cons of individualism? how does it compare to collectivism? ie, conflicts in individualism vs conflicts in collectivism.
ReplyDeleteIndividualism is a remarkable characteristics of American culture. I think you should separate individualism and courage. Individualism stresses that individual should deal with affairs without others'influences. And courage emphasizes that people should bravely face challenges and take risk to succeed. However, they are not conflicted thus people also mix them.
